PORTRAITURE

Portraits from around the world.

Desert child. During a camel journey in the state of Rajasthan, some children from a nearby village were playing at a well that we had stopped at to let the camels drink. Despite being unable to communicate via speech due to our language barriers, we managed to work out names and ages using a game of charades, and drawing lines in the earth. We climbed trees and they picked edible berries for us to snack on. They were all extremely photogenic, but this was my favourite shot of the series.

Rahul. When I came across a small lake in the shadow of the great fort in Jodhpur, many people were taking part in a Pitru Paksha religous ceremony. Rahul kindly invited me to join in, and patiently guided me through the process.

Jodhpur, India

Unknown Man. Performing a religious bathing ceremony with his family in Pushkar. He saw my camera and asked me to take a photo of him, holding his child. The time it took me to bring the camera up to my eye, he had quickly grabbed a plastic monkey mask his friend was holding and placed it on his head like a hat, with his son looking as confused as I was.

Pushkar Lake, Pushkar, India

Jolanda. A German friend I met trekking to the ‘Lost City’ in Colombia holding up a beautiful leaf skeleton.

Sierra Nevada Jungle, Columbia

This indigenous child emerged from the leaves on the side of a track whilst I was trekking in Colombia. I only had about 10 seconds before they slipped back into the dense jungle, I am not completely happy with the shot as it was very rushed but sometimes you have to cherish these little surprises that emerge in life and be glad you captured something. Two freestyle rappers performing and busking daily on the sandy streets and beaches in the town I lived in Mexico for a month.

Woman from Pushkar. This woman was directly in front of me on a packed standing room only bus. She had a powerful gaze and an amazing nose ring and asked if I could take a portrait.

This boy spends his time helping out at the burning gates in Banaras, where the flames have not been left to extinguish for 3700 years. A body is bought down every few minutes to be burned in around 40 individual pyres by the Ganges. Read more here.
